Matt Lucas Extends Apology to Millie Bobby Brown After Online Backlash Over Remarks on Her Appearance: ‘I Regret Posting Hurtful Comments’

In response to Millie Bobby Brown’s criticism of his performance on “Stranger Things,” British actor Matt Lucas apologized to her on Instagram on Monday.

“To Millie, I wanted to reply and give some background after seeing your post,” Lucas replied. “I co-wrote and starred in a sketch program called ‘Little Britain’ almost twenty-five years ago. Vicky Pollard, a character in it, had blonde hair and wore a pink shirt all the time. Since you also had blonde hair and a pink top in the picture, I included one of her catchphrases to draw attention to the similarities.

“I thought you were fantastic, and I was embarrassed when the media reported that I’slammed’ you,” he added. “First, that’s not my way, and second, I believe you’re amazing. If I believed it would have upset you, I wouldn’t have shared it, but I acknowledge that it did, and I’m sorry. Matt X.

Brown uploaded an Instagram post earlier that day criticizing Lucas and other critics for their “disturbing” remarks about “my face, my body, and my choices.” Lucas apologized in response.

Brown captioned her Instagram video with, “I started in this industry when I was 10 years old.” For some reason, people are unable to grow with me because I grew up in the spotlight. Rather, people behave as though I should remain in the past, as if I should continue to look like I did in Season 1 of “Stranger Things.” And I’m suddenly a target because I don’t.
